about

This song is one of my earliest musical memories, and not because of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Mom used to perform in the 1960s and early 70s with a folk group called The Mudlarks. I've been hearing Mom sing this song since before I could speak. I remember her haranguing audiences into singing the different harmonies, and then throwing her head back and wailing over them all! The Mudlarks pretty much stuck to Pete Seeger's Wimoweh arrangement, which was in turn inspired by a tune called Mbube by a South African musician named Solomon Linda. Miriam Makeba's version is the one I like the best. Mom isn't nuts about The Tokens' The Lion Sleeps Tonight, but I love that version too. I think I managed to sneak a Tokens quote in the electric guitar part near the end.
